Sexual abuse by college teacher triggered statewide protests in Balasore Odissa.

Balasore (Odissa) 

Principal of an autonomous college in Balasore district of Odissa state in India has been arrested on monday in connection with an attempted suicide of a college student in the campus by setting herself on fire. Following the incident the student sustained serious burn injuries was admitted in Balasore District Hospital initially and shifted to AIIMS for advanced treatment.


Suspended 

The Principal was suspended after the student of B. Ed course attempted suicide by setting herself on fire.

No action taken 

Inaction from the part of college authorities over her sexual harassment complaint against her professor who sexualy harassed her.

The Higher Education Department said in their suspension order that the Principal had failed to handle the complaint in proper manner and also failed to performing his duty as Principal in this regard.

The father of the student alleged that the Principal gave pressure over his daughter to withdraw complaint against the Prime accused.

Investigation

A two member team of the Crime Branch and Education Department are investigating the incident now. Meanwhile the Congress party demanded judicial probe to the incident.
